A SESSION WITH “WANJIKU”: THE ZERONESS🤯🤯😠😠During the Easter holiday, I met a group of ordinary but hardworking Kenyans, who are, in many contexts, referred to as “Wanjikus” or “Common Wananchi”. Apparently, all the eight people in the group happened to have benefitted from the Unga subsidy which was in place sometime around July last year. The discussion they were having had cost of living and delayed salaries in it. In course of the discussion, one of them said, “We’re not interested in whoever (if any) was benefitting from the subsidies, but in acquiring the maize flour at Ksh 100 or even less!” (Translated). The weight of this statement drew my attention closer, as I internalized. The utterer of the statement is among the millions of people who’ve heard about the government’s approach on the subject i.e. subsidizing production as opposed to consumption. The statement elicits the need of assessing the level of acceptance and absorption of policies t

BUSY BUT DISORIENTED AND DEPRESSED 🤯🤯 A ll mornings, the streets are ever busy with myriads all over, each trying to make to their workplaces. The offices, shops, open air spaces, markets and fields they work in are used to the unending stuff that begin once the people have their step in them. It does not end here, as the multitudinous activities consume a greater deal of the days. In the evenings, the same people are ever busy as they return to their abodes, having toiled enough. They cross paths with others reporting for the night shifts, since a 24- hour economy it is. As if not enough, some spend the day in one job and report for another job in the evening. After all, being busy is better than being idle or bored, and the most difficult task on earth is to do nothing. Despite the hard work, the society is being tormented from all corners. Sixty years after independence, many Kenyans are still immersed in abject poverty, ignorance a

WHAT NEXT AFTER MONDAY 5 TH SEP 2022? It ends as a week culminated with legal battle, as “learned friends” tried hard to lay substantive evidence on the Ruto vs Raila case before the Supreme Court of Kenya. The conviction, articulation, follow-up queries and counter-responses occupied the court’s floor for a great deal of the days. Many Kenyans and foreigners gave audience, as they spectated and assumed the role on “online judges”. It was indeed a contest that heavily operationalized the legal space, for all submissions had to be made within the timeline given. September 5, 2022 will indeed go down as one of the most remarkable days in the Kenyan political history. The end result of all the “…prima facie...”, “…de minimis non curat lex...”,“… pro bono & cui bono..” ,“…quid pro quo..”, “…Jose Camargo…”, “…F34 A and B…” “…IEBC servers…” “…50%+1…” and any related submission will be known by all. Nevertheless, the discretion is left to the judges of this superior court. In all, a

Martha Karua, the Iron Lady She is a lady no new to the public eye, having undertaken weighty roles for decades. Lots of analyses have been done and prompt considerations put in place to settle for Martha Karua, who as the descriptions by many is “The Iron-Lady”. This would imply that she is indeed a perfect choice for the running mate’s position in the Azimio Coalition. She beat many hopefuls e.g. Peter Kenneth, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Peter Munya. Notably, the win has been accompanied by excitement and celebration, in that for the first time in Kenyan history, a woman is set to deputize such a political heavyweight i.e. Hon Raila Odinga. Martha Karua served as the Gichugu constituency member of parliament from 1992, a position she held until 2012, when she had her first stab in presidency (2013). Her record as the Minister for Justice, National Cohesion and Constitutional affairs, until her resignation in 2009 is quite remarkable. This als

THIS MAN GACHAGUA After the exhaustion of midnight oils and daytime’s grease, Rigathi Gachagua (current Mathira MP) is announced as Dr William Ruto’s running mate. It definitely is a triumphant moment for the Kenya Kwanza Alliance and many of their supporters. In the same light, the announcement could also have been an epitome of partial sobs of despair for those who had different expectations. Nevertheless, Gachagua it is. The man has won the heart of William Ruto from the genesis of the “Tangatanga” vs “Kieleweke” shows of might. However, this is just what meets the eyes of many and could perhaps be only a tickle in the considerations (I don’t know). Among the prestigious positions the man has held is that of personal assistant to Uhuru Kenyatta between 2002 and 2006. First-hand info (from him) has it that their work relationship was promising and a display of a collaborative duo. What changed this 12 years later going forwa

IN HONOUR OF THE ICONIC KIBAKI Absolute grief as the country, and the world mourns following the death of Kenya’s 3rd president, His Excellency Mwai Kibaki. His illustrious legacy will forever be cemented in our hearts. As described by many from different walks, he was indeed a tolerant, gallant, and selfless man, in addition to all attributes that would best describe an entirely great leader. It is during his reign that Kenya achieved remarkable milestones in the social, economic, and political spheres making it great. Kenya, Africa, and the world feel the vacuum left by the demise of such an intellectual. Kibaki did not become a global icon in a day but always strived his way up until holding the highest office in Kenya for 10 years. Having studied economics, history, and political science, he beat the odds to build a reputable persona. His manner of approaching issues was unique and transformative, as he took a solution-based approach to

Earthquakes in Political Promises It is an era where promises from the political arenas are embraced with mixed attitudes. The blend that constitute reactions towards them depend on political loyalty and affiliations, level of comprehension, historical apexes, the needs identified by the people etc. All the factors have a substantive niche in the entirety of these promises. It takes purposive cognition to establish both the workable and the treacherous aspects of the promises. It is devastating that a greater part of the voters take little time to scan the enticing utterances by the politicians. More intriguingly, some scholars in the fields of technology, governance, entrepreneurship, agriculture, health and all other components of an enabling infrastructure for development are either dormant or staggering in the cocoons of jeopardy. The long term essence of the promises is at times not put in the equation, in that the politicians work to satisfy their hunger for votes and ultima
